The 2011 Rugby World cup will be held in New Zealand.

The 2011 Rugby World Cup will be the seventh time that the Rugby World Cup (RWC) has been held. At a meeting of the International Rugby Board (IRB) held in Dublin on 17 November 2005, New Zealand was selected as the host country in preference to Japan and South Africa.

There were two rounds of voting by the IRB Council, with South Africa eliminated in the first round.

The New Zealand Rugby Football Union (NZRU) are loosely planning to hold the tournament from September to October 2011.

The final must be staged in a stadium that holds 60,000 or more and there is currently a plan to redevelop Eden Park in Auckland.

Their team, the All Blacks have already been named as the favourites.

Half time at a dismal England v Argentina match.
England's play so far is categorised by:

Giving away penalties
Sin bin
Fighting
Dependancy on kick and chase
Lack of support in the backs
Elimination of three opposition players by causing injury

Edit: As the match ends with an English win:
In the past we won many matches on the strength of Jonny Wilkinson's kicking. Today we almost lost it on the weakness of Jonny Wilkinson's kicking. We need a talented, athletic group of backs.

The other teams in the world cup who may have been worried about facing England will be much encouraged.

Marvellous performance by Wales against South Africa. That's the way to do it :good: Ironic that they played so much better than England yesterday but lost by a point.

Didn't catch any of the games over the weekend but it looks like it that all of the home teams apart from Wales played bad and they will have to buck their ideas up against the major teams.

Hi,

Not wanting to appear stupid but I'll have to ask, how are points won in rugby? Why did Wales get 1 point for losing:~

Help please,

It is a friendly and sportsman-like scoring system, as follows:

Win - 4 points
Draw - 2 points
Loss - 0 points
4 or more tries - 1 point
Loss by 7 points or less - 1 point

I think this is one of the most incentive scoring systems in any sporting competition, as it rewards skill and determination, and I just wish other sporing events would adopt such a positive approach in rewarding the fans with positive point scoring action on he field.

New Zealand v Japan

New Zealand ran riot as they crushed Japan 83-7 in their World Cup Pool A clash in Hamilton and the poor Japanese didn't stand a chance against New Zealand who looked frighteningly good.

In other news:
It seems England's preparation for Sunday's clash with Georgia includes getting drunk at a bar hosting a “Mad Midget Weekender (http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/standard-sport/rugby/article-23987221-england-rugby-stars-defended-after-night-out-at-mad-midget-weekender.do)” show, and Martin Johnson said that he would not be imposing drinking bans on the squad, and will stick by that decision, despite the players being photographed in mock-wrestling matches and scrums with one of the stars of the club’s show.

England versus Georgia
Nice to see that both sets of fans are carrying the same flag (almost); viva St. George :)

Same old story from England though; although winning at half time they've already given away 11 penalties, and just before half time another sin-binning which Georgia immediately punished with a try and conversion. You are tedious, guys :at-wits-end:

Much better second half for England - scrum was hugely positive, running on the ball better, and more importantly discipline a lot tighter. If I was going to pick one fault and that would be handling awareness which needs to tighten up as there were too many forward passes, still not bad overall :)

Now the grudge match France vs Canada and I really want to see the Canadians do well here :)

Criticism and disappointment is a long way from disrespecting them. Second half turned out to be a lot better and as they wore Georgia down there was a lot more of the flair that I hoped for, and it bodes well for their next match; will it be France? Up next: France.. can I keep my eyes open?

Playing much better in an attacking sense, still too many infringements and giving needless penalties. But encouraging to say the least.

I would say the needless penalties have been kept a minimum TBH and it is a much tighter performance from England - still to be tested against a normal side but that will come next week against the Scots and more likely the Irish in the semi-final.

Should be a cracker and I have to go shopping etc :( Think the Kiwi' will win comfortable myself, but you never know which French team will turn up. I think the commentators are getting ahead of themselves in thinking scotland will turn over the Argentinians, i reckon Scotland are going to get beaten easily by the pumas.

At half time it is indeed a cracker. France were all over NZ for the first ten minutes, but NZ turned it around and now France looking rather dazed, and a lot of points adrift. 3-19

Got back from shopping just in time for the final whistle as the French kicked into touch, damn. All blacks looking very good, but you feel with them they always have one shocker in them each tournament against one of the better teams. They can't afford to do that in a probable semi final v the Springboks.

Scotland - Argentina: 6-3 at half time. I'm enjoyaoing this match; what a battle. Scotland making so many opportunities only to lose the ball in contact. If they can sort that in the second half Scotland ought to pull away. :good:

Scotland v Argentina has been a decent game despite no tries and only 3 penalties converted. Scotland are killing themselves with the turnovers and Argentina's line outs are a disaster. If this was any of the favourite teams playing they would be ripped to bits, yet Scotland are being praised for that first half performance (not by all mind) which i find rather strange. They have played a flowing game with ball in hand but have done little with it. You can bet that they won't try and play this way against the auld enemy next game but make it a scrappy affair with loads of kicking etc.

No pity for the Scots whatsoever. I'd feel duped if I were a Scottish fan though, they only put the effort in against England. If they put that effort in against every team they might actually get further rather than be the happy losers because they pushed England, pathetic attitude if you ask me.

I always wanted the Scottish to do well in sport, being a home country and all that. But their bitterness towards the English with their "anybody but England" shirts etc has turned me against them.

I always wanted the Scottish to do well in sport, being a home country and all that. But their bitterness towards the English with their "anybody but England" shirts etc has turned me against them.
I personally will not fall into that trap, and I was more referring to the old game between Scotland and England and I will always cheer on England against another home nation, but, if Scotland play another country then I will become a red haired fiery Scotsman for the day and cheers them on as I will for all of the home nations.

This "anybody but England" mentality is just juvenile jealous rubbish, and is perpetuated by a band of mindless morons OMHO.

You'd be surprised at how widespread this attitude is though Colin, it is certainly not a minority. I#m sure one of our Scottish fans will back me up on this. We fight wars together, we get on well to a certain extent, when it comes to sport they hate us.

As I said Gordon I will not lower myself to that level and I never mentioned numbers - it's just like football 'supporters' who think every other team is crap apart from their own team, really stupid to be honest.

If only everybody had those thoughts mate. I still have no sympathy for Scotland though, you have to play to 100% against everybody and not just those you choose. Fiji v Wales should be a cracker tomorrow.

been a cracking game so far, Ireland with a lot of possession but the welsh backs have been immense so far. 10-10 now.....reckon if it stays close until the 70th min mark maybe the younger Welsh team might sneak it. Could even come down to a drop goal or late pen. Hope England put this effort in.

Ireland are beginning to get in a flap. Trying to force things rather than going through the phases.

edit: Game over for me... Wales are just too solid in their defence for the Irish and I cannot see two converted tries being scored by the Irish.

I have to say that Joubert is having a great game at ref, very calm and on the spot with his decisions. The best referees are the ones you don't notice and he is the perfect example.

Well done Wales. They scored more tries, looked more dangerous in attack, were better in defence, dominated the breakdown, kicked better tactically and are well deserving of their win.

I have to say I am disappointed with the Irish performance , shame as it was possibly the best opportunity Ireland will ever have to make a final.

This will be a good clash, I'm gonna go for the English, I think they've quietly gone about their work in pool play and improved along the way. Sheridan is a big loss but they'll be ok without.

Frances best game was against the All Blacks but since then they haven't improved much. I think England will win but you never know with the French come quarter final time.

Okay that's my hope, but, I'm quietly mentally preparing myself for 80 minutes of appalling rugby with an English win loss... bugger it I cannot read this :(

Why the HELL do we still have Stevens? Every single game he has been useless and given away more penalties than any other player.
France are completely dominating here. Also with a 50kg advantage in the scrum, it's pathetic we struggle at all.

This is going to be an easy French win at this rate.

I played Rugby for 16 years and seven of those years were for Chiswick Rugby Club and every game, and I mean every game, we played with pride - England just didn't have that fire - passing and handling errors were schoolboy and the loss was no more than we deserved as we have had a shocking cup. Well done to France they deserved that and we had it coming.

Best of luck to all the remaining teams, I think my heart wants to see a Wales, All Blacks Final, and thank god Wales and Ireland carried the flag for NH rugby today.
