Libya's former leader Col Muammar Gaddafi has been killed after an assault on his home town of Sirte, officials from the transitional authorities have said.

Information Minister Mahmoud Shammam said fighters on the ground had told him they had seen Col Gaddafi's body.

Other officials also said he was killed during the assault on Sirte.

The claims have not yet been independently verified, and other reports said he was captured alive.

The colonel was toppled in August after 42 years in power. The International Criminal Court has been seeking his arrest.

Nato, which has been running a bombing campaign in Libya for months, said it carried out an air strike earlier on Thursday that hit two pro-Gaddafi vehicles near Sirte.

It was unclear whether the strikes were connected with the reports of Col Gaddafi's death.

Reports say that he was discovered hiding in a drain and pleaded for the finder not to shoot him. Shortly afterwards he was dead. Probably natural causes. ;-)

Natural causes of the blood loss from a bullet?

Looks like he was alive and then was executed by the looks of this film as he is seen walking.

Apparently he was dragged around and pretty much beaten, with blood coming out from many parts of the body, before he was killed.

I know he was an awful leader, and awful guy. But really they shouldn't have done that, not only because pretty much none deserves that, but because the rebels should have been better than him.

It seems thats a recurring problem with people in Eastern/Arabic countries, they are too violent and angry. Though many times they are justified, I can't help but wonder why it is we in the "west" have relatively stable countries, and there's such a divide.

Still, the world can only be a better place now.

Another problem in those countries is a huge self delusional idea of pride. So these leaders do not have the wisdom to accept that change is coming. If they did, they would relinquish power, avoid the deaths of countless countrymen and leave with their (local) reputations intact, and maintain some kind of self respect. Instead they hold on to power come hell or high water, cause the deaths of thousands of people and then die like a dog in a local drain.

I dont like the humiliation he received before hits death and alleged torture. Sickening.
Id of course preferred a trial or a single shot in the head.

In the end though I think a good day for Libya no more prolonged resistance?
