Aside from sligthly disagreeing about MT, as I understand that the state benefits to the tune of £112M a day from oil revenues at the present time (not a bad income when you consider that the oil companies who found the stuff and then extracted it earn "only" a third of that), the above post is undoubtedly the most useful and practical post I have ever seen on any forum. Well done!

I have been fortunate in terms of employment, and so there's not a lot of practical advice I can offer to anyone caught by this recession. Perhaps my only practical advice is for people to consider further education, as this takes you off the benefit budget and spares you the ignomy of being patronised by local job centre staff. And at least you will be using your down time productively, and your CV will look a bit better as a result of better qualification, so it could be win-win.

Two condoms a week, huh? Someone else is getting my share!

Tocoben, When did TVCatchup give better advice than Job Centre some great tips and advice their.

An addition to Daniel's post more qualifications are better, although their may be drawbacks:
    - Qualifications may outweigh work experience
    - Employees like to claim to be cleverer than employees
    - Employers want employee retention therefore if your overqualified for job, you are more likely to leave.
Contradictory I am self employed so aim to have as many qualifications in my CV until i run out of space.

Ok, As i said many dont like MT.
Thatcher entered 10 Downing Street with a mandate to reverse the UK's economic decline. Her political philosophy and economic policies emphasised reduced state intervention, free markets, and entrepreneurialism. (How relevant today)
That all sounds good to be, but noticeably isent this speech quote so relevent today:
Quote Originally Posted by Margret Thatcher

In terms of unemployment, Banks and Confidence.

Im not Tory Fan, Nor Thatcher (who takes milk away from kids!?!). MT also has dementure now so no point bringing her back, but someone with a similar attutued to change, discipline, unity and great support for our troops wouldn't go a miss.

Good points about employer's reactions to qualifications, I hadn't quite looked at it that way. I can see that resentment would be a good reason not to give someone a job if the employer concerned felt themselves inadequate or threatened

Trouble is in this day and age of vanity degrees, the market is flooded by people who have a high self esteem and believe that their degree automatically entitles them to a managerial position. Unfortunately for them, many of the subjects offered as degrees are barely recognised by employers. For example, if you were looking for someone to manage your shop, would you employ someone who had a proven record of shop management and excellent references, or would you employ someone who had just graduated from Wycombe College (sorry, now called "Bucks New University") who had taken a 38 week part time "degree" course in retail management sponsored by a local bedding company? Perhaps I am missing something here, but I know who I would employ and who I would send on his way.

I'm no great fan of MT myself, but she did do a fair job, whereas at the present time we have a caretaker PM who is doing a reasonably good job under extremely difficult circumstances. I think we need stronger leadership than we have at present, a PM that people actually wanted as opposed to simply a leader that was less disliked than the one we have now.

The fact that someone in a position of political power (Jacqui Smith, Home Office) has used someone else, an Assistant Commisioner who was politically appointed and has admitted a hatred for the Conservatives, to conduct a raid on a Conservative MP to recover papers embarassing to the government, suggests that all is definitely not right.

But I'm being political, for which I apologise, there's some great practical advice in this thread.

    Default Over qualified

Employers are basically worried about having someone that will leave quickly. The cost of recruitment and training is high so you have to have a balance. If you appear over qualified they will suspect you are just waiting for a better opportunity to come along.

Getting more education is a good idea especially if you have been in the same job for years. Most places look for computer literacy and there are many short courses out there that can give you a certificate in word, excel, powerpoint.

You could also decide on a complete change of career and choose a subject you would enjoy. I am sure the government will have some schemes up and running soon considering the global financial situation. Keep an eye out as you may get a cash incentive to re-educate.

They had a scheme a while back that would pay for any class you chose. People were taking art and pottery courses all paid by the government. The thing I did miss out on was the palm top training which included a free palm top. Unfortunately the scheme was too popular so got changed.

You could also think about being self-employed as it does give you certain freedoms. You would have to be able to support yourself for at least one year as new businesses take time to become established.

MT did take the milk but as I was never privileged enough to be milk monitor and mine was invariably warm and sickly I can not remember being too unhappy. Personally I am never happy who ever is in charge.

My main problem with GB is that he just walked into the job and did not have the decency to give us a chance to vote. I know we do not ever get a choice of leader of any party but it just felt like he was running scared. I would say he is in a worse position now and is running out of time. In fact if he is really unlucky he will loose the election but the policies he decided on will work and the conservatives will take the credit.
