Thread: Java Based Application

  1. #1

    Default Java Based Application

    Hi,

I was looking into writing a Java application to watch the streams on, using the RED5 Java API, which allows me to connect to adobe flash media streams.

Making an app using the RED5 API should also allow us to create a recording functionality of the streams. I have read on the forums that this should be legal, but before going down this route would like to just get streaming first sorted. And then have to double check about legal issues of any recording functionality more.

The only issue is i obviously need some information about how to connect to the streams successfully, I'm assuming there must be some form of user/password handshaking, and i guess the geo-location stuff is dealt with by you guys at TvCatchUp, if someone could pm me some details as i kind of cant get much off the starting blocks without this.

    Cheers
    Michael

He has and hopefully answered a few questions. Sounds a very worthwhile project, I always fancied a Java appn myself, and we will support this wholeheartedly.

We have to be careful over stream access, as explained in the PM, but we will provide authentication handshaking on a user/user basis. Streams are RTMP, so any source will do for test purposes

should also allow us to create a recording functionality of the streams. I have read on the forums that this should be legal
Java is a user side application, therefore recording should be legal as long as the recording takes places on the users computer and is saved to their computer not severs.
I look forward to hearing more about this project.

Ok quick update to where ive goto, i started out using red5 client, but i couldnt convert or play the files i recorded/downloaded so i ended up using a freeware but not open source tool called juvdownloader, i have managed to make a swing client app which downloads rtmp streams to flash, these then get converted to avi using ffmpeg which i can then play using JMF player, there is a basic library function of the downloaded files.

It is in the stage where an very buggy initial poc can be uploaded/pass to mason and daniel etc. but just haven't got round to doing it, tbh the last time ive watched tv myself on here was last week. Will hopefully find some free place to upload to then give the link to those guys to download and play with and see what they think.

Some caveats, im using other streams to prove the rtmp recording of streams as need to finish the proof of concept before i tvc will give out any info on streams etc...this is to safe guard the streams, but it does mean cant 100% guarentee the download will work with their streams there is so many codec audio/video combos flash support, but i think ive tried enough other streams to be confident.

Im a mac tiger user, tho i had to develop in windows as its easier to get started with FFmpeg as its native. will have to port across to mac but atm its windows only and java6 code, though i have managed to port the app across to java 5 on my mac once to test all except the file conversion part, so should be possible at the end to be done.

Has this application got any where yet? If it's still being developped, I'd be willing to help out...
