Default German ISP wins right to not keep personal data

I use a German networking product and got this email from them today. Sorry for the google translation, but I think it's understandable. It celebrates that a class action lawsuit against data retention succeeded, under a German law regulating telecomms privacy. The networking company has deleted all of its records

Lets hope that other countries follow suit.

    Dear xxxx-user,

    The retention is unconstitutional!

The Court decided today, the Federal Constitutional Court. In order dismissing it with nearly 35,000 signatories to the largest ever class action lawsuit against data retention in Karlsruhe, a very clear success.

The good news for you as xxxx users: We were able to delete the previously stored data as a whole, which today is already done as quickly and fully. There are at xxxx, therefore no records from the Vorratsdatenspeichung more!

A small note: We have also published in the period from 2008 until today never had a single record to law enforcement authorities. A recent statistics of the queries in this regard is on our website.

In addition, the continued storage of stock data has been completely removed from the system. So you surf immediately with xxxx, without the stocks stored data. The issue is off the table!

We owe this to the Article 10 of the Basic Law, which regulates the postal and telecommunications secrecy.

This is great news, I dont think this will work in the UK.
I did read that our government is building its own data centre to store such data for long periods of time, including broadband and telephone logs.
