Thread: TVC on Ubuntu (or Linux in general)

  1. #1

Question TVC on Ubuntu (or Linux in general)

Well, I was bored and have been meaning to do this for a while so I have gone ahead and installed Ubuntu on another partition on my PC. Had a few issues when installing with getting my ATI Drivers to even work and then even more of a headache getting both my monitors to work properly but finally did it after a lot of time in terminal :P

Anyway, I installed Chrome (purely for the bookmark sync) and noticed that Flash Plugin doesn't come installed (even though the Adobe Website is adamant that you have it). So I did the trick where you copy the plug-in from Firefox to the Chrome plug-in directory and then force Chrome to look for extensions on start-up.
Anyway, here comes the problem. In Chrome everything is jerky as hell and half the site doesn't render (I assume that is cos of the border adds) and when I full screen It trys to span both monitors but only shows on one of them (so I have about 1/4 of the picture)

Now in FF there is no jitering (so plugin bs with Chrome explains that) but the player still goes all crazy on full screen. YouTube works perfectly fine with both browsers, including full screen, so wondering why it hates TVC so much....

If anyone has a similar setup (Linux + ATI + Dual Monitors) then I would be happy if you could suggest and possible fixes

    Thanks in advance,
    GOLDFiSH.

The imideate problem after a bit of searching seems to be simple... Flash sucks b***s... It has other known bugs on Linux such as full screen content will open at (0, 0) of overall desktop resolution even if the fullscreen was not initiated on that monitor. I am guessing that my problem and this one are somehow related so just wondered if any Dev's have any ideas?

Ok given up hope now... can't get it to keep focus in full screen on second monitor and still no fix for the full screen. Tried to apply the known windows fixes for the problems to no avail and with no way to decompile the libflashplayer.so file I can't even get to the code to find what hex values will need changing.
On top of that Adobe have dropped x64 bit Linux support for the foreseeable future so looks like there is no hope of an official fix anytime soon.

I have no idea about Linux, so pull me up if going wrong.

The jerky issue, could be to do with flash 10.1?
Try toggling Hardware Acceleration, see which is best for you. Though most have found downgrading flash is an effective solution.
As for youtube working fine, its a total different kettle of fish to TVCatchup, and presumably you where using HTML5

That's why I am dual booting at the moment... sucks cos i'm starting to like this Linux business. It is just massively let down by multi monitor support (although that is half graphics card manufacturer's fault) and Flash.
As for YouTube I know it is very much different but both use the flash plug-in (i disabled HTML5 for the purpose of comparison) and both suck Linux and flash apparently don't work too well together.
Appreciate the reply all the same and for what it's worth you probably know as much as me when it comes to this OS.

    Hello GOLFFiSH

There are other Flash Applications for Linux, as you're using Ubuntu if you simply open Aptitude package manager and search for Flash I do believe there are two or three different flash variations that work a little better than the standard Adobe Flash on Linux.

Ok first of all, Chrome now has adobe flash embedded, you don't need to install a flash plugin. Perhaps having done the "FF trick" is causing a conflict?
I am on Ubuntu Lucid 10.04 64 bit. Chrome works without any jerking. Full screen works perfectly in a dual screen configuration and displays on the correct screen.
I am also using ATI graphics.

If you still have no success also ask on the Ubuntu forums, I'm sure your problem can be resolved. When people move to Linux from years on Windows they're often used to having to go and find things in order to make something and are surprised at just how many things work "out of the box"

Appreciate the reply pauldsmyth. I am going to wait for Maverick Meerkat to be released before I do anything else, just too lazy

It plays smoothly now but still having the problems with dual monitors, I had issues just getting the dual screens working on the desktop, hopefully will have more luck next release. This is my first Linux Distro as I said.

Goldfish_92, it can be an up-hill struggle getting used to linux as your OS, but bravo for getting this far.
I have similar issues with full screen on my NVidia dual display, what happens is monitor one(not the one with the page on) has full screen video but only one half and the other has the web page with no video.
My work around for this is by employing compiz's zoom, which is hold SUPER(or windows button) and left mouse button to rubber-band the area to zoom an voila!. Or using the SUPER button and the mouse wheel to gradually zoom in/out to suit.

After everything became un-effing-watchible with border ads I have sought out other online streaming and by comparison tvcatchup is the buggiest and laggiest of them all.
I now watch msnbc, abc and fox news channel on another site, the quality of which has spoiled me. But saying that my American buddies are dead jealous i have this tvcatchup option!

Another workaround is a usb dongle which has digital freeview(£30) and has an awesome image ubuntu 8.10, using software called kaffiene(FREE), and NO flash (woot!). But you need an areal.

    Ubuntu 11.10 (Oneiric) - 64 bit.
Hadn't used Chrome/Chromium for a while (I mainly use Firefox).
Upgraded today from Flash 11 RC1 to Flash 11.0.1.152 and TVC is still fine with FF/Opera, but in Chromium 15.0.871.0 and Chrome 16.0.899.0 I get sound but no picture at all.

Youtube gives me picture and sound with Chrome/Chromium.

I've tried the built-in flash plugin as well as disabling that so that Chromium/Chrome will use the same plugin as FF/Opera.

    Anyone else affected by this?
