    Default Remembrance Day

    Remembrance Day is on 13th November. Join the 2 minute silence at the 11th hour. "We Will Remember Them"

    Leave your messages and thoughts below.

    The Ode comes from For the Fallen, a poem by the English poet and writer Laurence Binyon and was published in London in the Winnowing Fan; Poems of the Great War in 1914.

    Ode of Remembrance
    With proud thanksgiving, a mother for her children,
    England mourns for her dead across the sea.
    Flesh of her flesh they were, spirit of her spirit,
    Fallen in the cause of the free.

    Solemn the drums thrill: Death august and royal,
    Sings sorrow up into immortal spheres.
    There is music in the midst of desolation,
    And a glory that shines upon her tears.

    They went with songs to the battle, they were young.
    Straight of limb, true of eyes, steady and aglow.
    They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted,
    They fell with their faces to the foe.

    They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old:
    Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
    At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
    We will remember them.

    They mingle not with their laughing comrades again;
    They sit no more at familiar tables at home;
    They have no lot in our labour of the daytime;
    They sleep beyond England's foam.

    But where our desires are and our hopes profound,
    Felt as a well-spring that is hidden from sight,
    To the innermost heart of their own land they are known,
    As the stars are known to the night.

    As the stars will be bright when we are dust,
    Moving in marches upon the heavenly plain;
    As the stars that are starry in the time of our darkness,
    To the end, to the end, they remain.

    I found out something interesting for me the other day. My partners father was told he was too stupid to join the Japanese army so he spent the war as an engineer for the planes used by the Kamikaze. Just before he was old enough to fly his own mission the war ended. As my grandfather worked as an engineer on the spitfires they both had similar jobs but on somewhat opposing sides.

    Remembrance Day Poppy Sticker - UK - Each year the nation expresses its unequivocal support for The Royal British Legion's charity work through the Poppy Appeal. The 2010 Poppy Appeal is emphasising the need to help the Afghan generation of the Armed Forces and their families â today and for the rest of their lives.

    ive just read the left wingers along with islamic groups are looking into banning the poppy, this angers me and i wont say on here what i said on FB about it but why should we allow folk that arnt really british to dictate what REAL british people are allowed to do !!!
    Sod the ban in plan, wear the poppy with pride...bout time the good old right wingers whooped the lefties asses.

    "The Poppy is under attack from two quarters: Islamic operators and Left-Wing operators. Why? In the very same way that national flags, anthems and memorials are reminders of the existence of a national identity, the Poppy is very much the one poignant symbol of lives lost during wars fought for the Defence of the Realm and the Protection of British Interests." I don't care about such minorities as poppy day to me is a memorial day observed in Commonwealth countries to remember the members of their armed forces who have died in the line of duty since World War I.
    This includes many different countries from all over the world, so if the crazies want to try and ban this using the reason of it's Britishness, of which will NEVER happen, then they completely barking up the wrong tree as it is a Commonwealth day not just English.
    I wouldn't even give them a second thought on this special day and I urge others to do the same.

    I've just received this in an email from a friend
    In May 2010 Tohseef Shah spray painted a British War Memorial with "islam will dominate Osama" he was fined £50 & walked free from court.
    In November 2010, Emdadur Choudhury burned a Poppy during the 2mins silence. He too was given a fine, £50 and walked free from court.
    Last week in a Portsmouth Court, 2 men were sentenced to 6 months in prison for painting a Poppy on a mosque.
    Pass this on if you think its a bl***y disgrace !!!

    On all sides Chris, this is total disrespect for another religion who probably are good and decent human beings. and apart from that it is criminal damage.
    We should not take matters into our own hands otherwise we are no better than the people you mention above and I am personally happy that these idiots were sent to prison - Blaming a whole religion for a few extremists is unintelligent and irrational and we need to keep a perspective here.

    Sorry, I think I might have come across as agreeing with the graffiti, which was not my intent. I agree with the sentence for the criminal damage, what I don't agree with is the fact that 2 people showed a flagrant disrespect for our countries traditions and all they got was a fine

    wow, I really like that! I would have liked it even more if the people of the mosque sprayed it themselves to counter the predicted protests on Remembrance day. No harm done I say.
