Just started watching all the originals again (up to Series V so far), with the commentary track on, so funny.

Well I thought 'Back to Earth' was fantastic. Bearing in mind all the problems plaguing the production -
    - Norman Lovett pulling out before he would be told he was in the story (for more info see the Doug commentary on the DVD).
    - The tiny budget of 400k for the three episodes and the making of.
    - The fact that the script started to be written late since Doug had personal problems and then many re-writes had to take place to put Holly in/out and to not include Kryten in episode 1 since originally Rob wasn't available.

After all that they made a film style story which was dramatic and funny. Red Dwarf is my favourite TV show and this story lived up to my exectations, surpassed them actually.
The ratings were a gigantic success -
    - 4 Million for Episode 1
    - 1 Million for a repeat of 'Gunmen of the Apocalypse' after episode 1 (thought it was worth a mention considering it is a repeat from 1993)
    - 3 Million for Episode 2
    - 2.9 Million for Episode 3
    - 1.5 Million for the Making of
Also Dave are getting good ratings for repeats of them 3-parter.

Apparently Dave and Grant Naylor Productions are in talks for a 6 episode series and Chloe Annet, Danny John Jules and Robert Llewellyn have been contacted about it.
Also if you do not have the DVD yet you should get it, it is just brilliant, worth it for the cast commentary (which is their best one) and my favourite Red Dwarf extra ever, the Doug Naylor commentary.

Oh and I think it is funny to compare Red Dwarf with Doctor Who, they are both my favourite shows with Red Dwarf in first and DW in second. Bearing in mind both shows are going into HD for the first time.
'Back to Earth' boasted a tiny budget that would have made them scared in 1989 yet the effects and green screen work were fantastic.
'Planet of the Dead' had a relatively big budget compared to a normal episode of Who yet what we ended up with was some poor green screen work and a flying bus.

I don't think I should talk about the writing though, I would go into a rant against how bad 'Planet of the Dead' was, I mean if Who has had a flying bus once you don't need one again!

Red Dwarf X set for autumn 2012 - 12 April, 2011 | By Alex Farber
Classic sci-fi comedy Red Dwarf is set to make a return to Dave next autumn as broadcaster UKTV gets close to a recommission.

Speaking at the Dimension Jump convention, series creator Doug Naylor said UKTV had agreed to air Red Dwarf X as a 6 x 30-minute series, due to start filming this November.

The tenth series, the first since UKTV resurrected Red Dwarf in April 2009 as a series of 3 x 30-minute specials, is likely to feature the original cast including a possible return for computer character Holly.

The Grant Naylor Productions show originally ran on BBC2 for eight series with the development of this latest series revealed by actor Craig Charles in January.

    UKTV declined to comment.
OMG OMG OMG! ... Exciting !

I would prefer 4 episodes (40 mins) rather than 6 episodes. But can't wait

No... The 3 prater was just extended Long Episode. They could have got it all into one episode, longer episodes = more filler.
