Default Is Adobe Reader really safe?

I have only Adobe Reader; no other Adobe products installed. It seems that every other day Adobe Update rushes off to the web and downloads an update to "address customer enhancements and security fixes" or words to that effect. Latest this morning was about 40 Mb. None of the myriad other programs on my PC feel the need to do that, except for Microsoft updates which covers a far greater scope and is normally kept down to once a week. It's only a reader; is Adobe really so piss poor at programming? Or is it just a crude method of keeping themselves in my face?

More when they put new content in, it auto updates so as you don't go to open a newer PDF in and older version of the reader and it tells you to whistle.

That said, their Downloader was found to have a hole in it a while ago that was left open until you rebooted and it un-installed itself.

Could try Foxit Reader. Been using this for a while now instead of Adobe Reader. Gets the odd up-date but nothing too intrusive.

Foxit reader is really good and I used to use it all the time until I found Nitro PDF Professional which is really good for everyday business purposes and I use it all the time for my publishing company.

I've tried Foxit reader myself in the past come to think of it. It probably fell by the wayside in one of my many system rebuilds. I'll give Nitro PDF a go for the hell of it; I really find Adobe intrusive. That just leaves the obnoxious Java Update ....

TBH you can edit the auto-update (although not recommend) out of the registry.

I've just installed Nitro PDF and am bowled over by it. Integrates superbly with Office 2010 and has same look and feel. Time to remove "Cute PDF writer"
    Thanks for the tip, Colin.

Just noticed that Google Chrome as of v8 contains a PDF reader. If you just want a no frills reader it seems to work great (I tested one file )
