Default Apple has more money than the US Government

"THE debt crisis engulfing the US government has left it with less ready cash than computer giant Apple.

Official figures show the US Treasury has £44.8billion in cash on its books - compared with £46.3billion at Apple.

One internet blogger joked: "Well Obama isn't in charge of Apple - so no surprise!"

Quite misleading considering Apple has relatively few assets compared to USA Government, lets put all the buildings and land they could sell to one side and look at their tangible assets:
The United States Bullion Depository, often known as Fort Knox, is a fortified vault building located adjacent to Fort Knox, Kentucky, used to store a large portion of United States official gold reserves and occasionally other precious items belonging or entrusted to the federal government.
Where is Apple's Fort Knox filled to the brim with prices less items and gold reserves? The gold in their is estimated to be worth $228.1 billion - that's five times what Apple has on its books.

Cash is one part of the story - Id rather lend money to a guy who owns a house but only 50p in his pocket than a guy renting a home with £1 in his.

    ----------------

On the American debt crisis - I read an interesting article that someone has Bet $4.8 Billion On a U.S. Default - insider knowledge perhaps or a risky gamble.

"...relatively few assets..."? cash IS an asset. "Over 75 billion dollars in the bank". http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-14340470
Personally, I'd feel more comfortable lending cash to Apple than the U.S government, not that I'm expecting either of them to knock on my door anytime soon
