F1 game: ideas for 2012

We had a thread like this before: archived here. We had many ideas after the season had started and so could not be used. That's human nature; out of season we're not focussed on it. So here's an attempt for 2012 while we're still focussed. The purpose is to just capture ideas when you think of them; no need to think them through. Any that are liked can be prepared in time for next season.

Here's one. It is rare for anyone to score any points for their third driver choice, so how can we make the third driver choice more exciting?
Idea 1: Predict race finishing position, and award points according to how close the finishing position was to the prediction (like kers).
Idea 2: Treat the drivers in the third group as a mini race within the race, and publish "betting odds" in the prediction thread. Scored a bit like the P3 mini-competition, you can choose the favourite for a few points or a driver lower down for possibly a mountain of points.

I like idea 2, especially if the 3 new teams catch up a bit, could make it good fun!

I think the problem with idea 1 is we'll probably see what we had with the early KERS predictions with everyone choosing the back teams like the HRT's for the last places.

As a side point, we could rename the joker to DRS to be our overtaking aid, although most of us played it the same time.

I had an idea the other day (I am capable of having ideas :P)... Now what I am about to explain can only come into force after the first weekend of racing;I.E after the first race. Once those results are in you could pick a team like Red Bull, McLaren, Force India, Torro Rosso etc etc. You would have both drivers from the team and points would be gained for every place gained by your drivers...or deducted for places lost!!! Sort of makes picking which team you want more evenly spread than picking the usual bigger teams. Of course there is a slight luck element to this as a driver who came 3rd in his last race might crash out of the race on the first corner and lose you a bag of points or indeed it could work out the other way. it also involves a bit of skill/knowledge, which teams perform well on which track, which teams have had problems leading up to a race etc etc. It would keep the game more competitive imo.

Whatever is decided it is important to keep it simple and that is what I have tried to do in the past... too many complications will only put off people.

Just feeding in a mini-idea.. formula1.com publishes the fastest times through a speed trap; an attraction is that surprisingly the fastest cars tend to be the back markers rather than the usual fly guys. So if we gave bonus points for speed trap it would give greater weight to your driver 3 choice.

How about losing the 3rd driver and only choosing 2 drivers. this can open the number of drivers to choose from in driver1 & 2. And the 3rd driver choice can be replaced with choosing who will get the fastest lap of the race? you dont want to make the game too confusing.

Possibly extend point scoring to the top 10 drivers, this would give the 3rd choice drivers a bit more of a chance of scoring some points.
