Attack on children in Syria
If you've seen the news today, you might have heard about the dozens of children killed in Syria, and then read past the headline. They weren't just killed they were brutally attacked and mutilated.
This quote from the BBC article is gentle:
On Google News they had a line of videos under the headline. Children had their mouths ripped upon, some of them you couldn't tell where their face was, and some of them had their brains lying half out their skull.The "massacre" video which has emerged from Houla bears the sound of a man screaming:
"These are all children! Watch, you dogs, you Arabs, you animals - look at these children, watch, just watch!"
On a bedroom floor dozens of little children lie dead, their arms and legs strewn over one another. Many of their eyes are still open, bearing a look of shock and fright. They are all covered with blood and obviously suffered terrible deaths.
A girl, who is perhaps seven years old, wearing a headscarf and pink diamante belt, lies face to face in death with a much younger boy.
Another little boy in a yellow jumper lies with his arms stretched out, almost cradling the head of the girl next to him. Blood covers both their faces and soaks their hair.
People off camera are shouting: "Oh God, oh God, oh God."
So while we are all bothered about the Greek economic "crisis", and how there might be an influx of immigrants into our country. That's whats happening in Syria, where officially theres a "ceasefire".
Now it's not known for certain who committed the attacks, but it's most likely forces loyal to the government. But one of the core functions of government and it's military is to protect its citizens, and at an even more fundamental and basic function is too protect it's children. If it can't do that then they are also responsible for the attack, even if the opposition performed the attack. How disgusting is it that the president and government are sitting in their palaces and houses, while this happens?
Who knows what those children could have done in their life, their potential is far more important than any affect on oil that Libya has/had. Surely its our duty as humans to do something to try and prevent attacks like these?
We need to start thinking just what exactly the UN is doing, because they have 100s of monitors in the country, and the people in charge are sitting comfortable in stable countries, deciding to call a meeting sometime soon about it. And what our leaders are doing. And even what our society is like, that we've set up a society where a system that humans have invented (the economy) controls what we do and what we decide is more important.
If you want to try and sleep easy tonight don't go near pictures or video on the attacks. But just know that while we lie in our beds, about 50 children no longer have life and are lying dead on the floor eyes open, and disfigured, it's harsh but it's the truth.
